Municipal Development Plan

In March 2006, Lacombe County initiated a review of the 1998 Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Land Use Bylaw (LUB), first adopted by Council in 1992. The purpose of the review was to ensure a proactive and comprehensive approach to dealing with current and future growth challenges in the County.

Municipal Development Plan
A MDP is a strategic plan that provides broad policy direction for future growth and development of the County. It also provides direction for Council and Administration on decision-making related to growth and development.

The MDP is the County's primary planning document, and as such, all other statutory and non-statutory plans developed by the County must be consistent with the MDP.

The MDP addresses how the County intends to deal with various issues, including:

  • protection of agricultural land
  • demand for residential acreages
  • opportunities for industrial/commercial development
  • need to protect environmentally sensitive areas
  • importance of working closely with neighbouring municipalities and other government authorities
