At the July 6, 2017 meeting, County Council gave second and third reading and passed Bylaw No. 1239/17 regarding the Lacombe Intermunicipal Development Plan.
The IDP is designed to provide a cooperative framework for managing changing land use in the fringe area around Lacombe. Originally adopted in 1993, the IDP encourages the Town and County to work together to address many growth issues that we are faced with in a way that respects the interests and needs of both municipalities. Our objective is to ensure that areas are protected for the long-term growth of the Town without unduly interfering with the continuation of existing uses in the urban fringe. The Town's future growth areas are identified in the IDP.

Lacombe County has adopted the Lacombe County/Village of Alix Intermunicipal Development Plan. The plan was created by a steering committee composed of elected officials and administrative staff representing both municipalities, and is based on public input provided throughout the IDP process. The IDP identifies areas for potential future residential, commercial, industrial and recreational development that will generate complementary land uses, efficient servicing, and opportunities for economic development while preserving scenic natural features.
Lacombe County, Red Deer County, the Town of Sylvan Lake, Summer Village of Birchcliff, Summer Village of Half Moon Bay, Summer Village of Jarvis Bay, Summer Village of Norglenwold, and the Summer Village of Sunbreaker Cove are collaborating to create a new Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) between all partnering municipalities. Currently, no regional IDP exists between all partnering municipalities.
A regional IDP is a proactive and comprehensive approach to dealing with the growth challenges that lie ahead.
