Blackfalds RCMP urges drivers to slow down and stay alert at intersections this winter

Blackfalds RCMP is reminding drivers that winter conditions demand continuous attention and ongoing caution.

Traffic intersections can become dangerous during and after long periods of snowfall. Your vehicle’s reduced traction from packed snow and black ice can turn a routine stop into a serious collision in seconds. Slippery driving surfaces significantly increases the amount of time needed to safely react and respond to all driving scenarios. Failing to account for this can have treacherous results.

Here are some practical tips to help you stay safe:

  • Start slowing down well before the intersection. Stopping distances on icy roads are much longer than you think.
  • Avoid slamming on the brakes. Gentle, steady braking helps keep control of your vehicle.
  • Give yourself space. More distance between you and the vehicle ahead means more time to react.
  • Watch for black ice. It often hides near intersections, especially in shaded areas or spots where snow has melted and refrozen.
  • Expect the unexpected. Other drivers may slide or struggle to stop — stay alert and be ready to adjust.
  • Make sure your signals and headlights work and use them early to let others know what you’re doing.
  • Keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists. Snowfall and poor visibility make them harder to see.
  • Even if you have the right-of-way, approach with caution. Yielding can prevent a crash if someone else can’t stop.
  • Check your tires and clear your windows and mirrors. Good traction and visibility are your best defense.

Winter driving is about patience and preparation. Slow down, plan ahead, and give yourself time to get where you’re going safely.
