Eckville Flood Study Now Underway
Residents in the Eckville area may notice increased activity near the Medicine River and Lasthill Creek this summer as part of the Eckville Flood Study, a provincially led initiative focused on improving flood hazard identification and public safety.
The study is being completed under Alberta’s Flood Hazard Identification Program, with additional support from the federal government. Its goal is to better understand flood risks and reduce potential damage from future flooding events.
Study Area and Scope
The study will assess flood hazards along:- Approximately 18 kilometres of the Medicine River
- Approximately 7 kilometres of Lasthill Creek
Work is taking place through the Town of Eckville, Lacombe County, and Red Deer County.
What Residents Can Expect
To support the study, survey crews will be working in and around the river systems throughout June and July 2026.
This work includes collecting:
- River channel measurements
- Ground elevation data
- Bridge and culvert information
This information will support the development of updated hydraulic models and flood maps.
Study Timeline
- Spring 2026: Study initiated
- Summer 2026: Field data collection and surveys
- Spring 2027: Anticipated completion of technical work
The project is currently in its early stages, and additional updates will be shared as work progresses.
How the Study Benefits the Community
The Eckville Flood Study will provide critical information to support:
- Emergency response planning
- Infrastructure design
- Land-use planning and development decisions
- Public awareness of flood risks
Future mapping will identify flood-prone areas, including floodways and flood fringe zones, helping guide long-term community planning.
