Lacombe County expands Chronolog Time-Lapse Photography project with five new stations

Lacombe County has expanded its Chronolog Time-Lapse Photography Project with the addition of five new monitoring locations, providing more opportunities for residents and visitors to participate in citizen science while learning about local ecosystems.

Supported through funding from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the Changes in the Natural World project encourages participants to help create a visual record of environmental change by taking photographs from fixed viewpoints over time.

Using a smartphone, visitors simply place their device in a mounted bracket and capture an image from the designated location. Submitted photos are added to an online timeline that creates a time-lapse record of seasonal and environmental changes.

The County's five new Chronolog locations include:

Buffalo Lake
Crooker Wetland
Sunset Legion Campground, Gull Lake
Confluence of the Blindman and Red Deer Rivers (Burbank)
Medicine River

These locations join the County's existing Chronolog sites, bringing the total number of locations to eight.

Each station also features educational signage that highlights natural phenomena and environmental processes that may be observed at the site, helping visitors better understand the dynamic nature of local landscapes.

The project supports Lacombe County's ongoing environmental stewardship efforts by:

Increasing awareness of environmental change
Encouraging family-friendly citizen science participation
Providing accessible outdoor learning opportunities
Building a visual archive of local environmental conditions
Inspiring stewardship of local waterbodies and natural areas
