Agricultural Service Board (ASB)
What is the Agricultural Service Board and what is its role in the County?
Agricultural Service Boards act as advisory bodies to municipal councils on agricultural matters.
The Agricultural Service Board Act was passed in 1945 to provide local authority over Alberta's growing weed and soil degradation problems. Over time, Counties and Municipal Districts across the Province established ASBs, up to a total of 69 today.
The first ASB meeting in Lacombe County (MD of Lacombe No. 64 at the time) was held on August 23, 1945. Since the Board's establishment, the Lacombe County ASB has provided recommendations and guidance to Lacombe County Council regarding weed control, agricultural pests, soil conservation and agricultural extension programming to support the agricultural industry and community within Lacombe County.
How does the County's ASB operate?
The Lacombe County Agricultural Service Board (ASB) comprises Council. Agricultural Services staff is responsible for delivering ASB programming and support activities under the Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, Soil Conservation Act, and Animal Health Act.
ASBs are supported at the Provincial level by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and more specifically the Agricultural Service Board Program.
