Snow Removal

The goal of winter maintenance for paved roads is to remove snow and ice from the road surface as quickly as possible. Time frames will vary depending on the severity and duration of the storm.

Lacombe County has five snowplows covering about 400 km of paved roads, eight graders covering approximately 1,700km of gravel roads, and three tractors that provide snow removal in County subdivisions.

The basic service level that we strive for is to have all the paved roads maintained to reasonable winter conditions within 12 hours after a snowstorm; however, this will vary depending on the severity and the storm's duration.

Lacombe County prioritizes the removal of snow on paved roads in the following order.

  1. County designated Primary Main roads
  2. County designated Secondary Main roads
  3. Hamlets and Subdivisions
  4. Main access roads to subdivisions

Snow removal will be undertaken in a manner that minimizes backtracking or excessive travel.

The goal of winter maintenance for gravel roads is to remove snow from the road surface after accumulations reach approximately 5 cm or more.

  • Local Roads – Snow removal will commence in alternating locations in a manner that minimizes motor grader backtracking or excessive travel.
  • Public access roads and machinery roads – Snow removal will only be undertaken to an established residence or to transport agricultural products, provided the road may be opened with a motor grader. This service will be subject to the availability of equipment.
  • Winging snow from shoulders and other maintenance will have secondary priority.

The basic service level that we strive for is to have the gravel road system maintained to reasonable winter conditions within four days after a snow storm; however, this will vary dependent on the severity and duration of the storm.

Snow removal on private property will not be done. Laneway Blading contractors have asked to add their name for the landowner's convenience.
